Pearls are among the most cherished gems in the world — organic, luminous, and timeless. Unlike diamonds or rubies, pearls are living gems formed inside molluscs, which makes them more delicate and deserving of thoughtful care. Whether you own a strand of classic Hyderabadi pearls or a pair of baroque pearl earrings, this guide will help your jewellery retain its lustre for generations.
Why Pearls Need Special Care
Pearls rank 2.5–4.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them softer than most gemstones. Their surface nacre — the iridescent coating that gives them their glow — can be damaged by acids, chemicals, and even the natural oils on your skin if not properly maintained. The good news: a simple care routine keeps them radiant for decades.
The Golden Rules of Pearl Care
1. Last On, First Off
Always put your pearls on after applying perfume, hairspray, and makeup. These products contain alcohol and chemicals that erode nacre over time. When you return home, remove your pearls first before anything else.
2. Wipe After Every Wear
Use a soft, lint-free cloth — ideally a clean chamois or microfibre — to gently wipe each pearl after wearing. This removes sweat and body oils that slowly dull the surface.
3. Keep Them Away From Water
Never wear pearls while swimming, bathing, or washing dishes. Prolonged water exposure weakens the silk thread on strung necklaces and can cause the pearls to loosen. Chlorine in pool water is especially damaging.
4. Store Separately
Pearls scratch easily when they rub against harder gemstones or metal clasps. Store them in a soft pouch or a fabric-lined jewellery box, away from your gemstone jewellery and sterling silver pieces.
5. Avoid Airtight Storage
Pearls are organic and need a little moisture to prevent cracking. Never store them in airtight plastic bags for extended periods. A fabric pouch in a cool, dry drawer is ideal.
How to Clean Pearl Jewellery at Home
- Dampen a soft cloth with plain water (never soak).
- Gently wipe each pearl individually.
- Lay the strand flat on a clean towel to dry completely before storing — hanging wet strung pearls stretches the silk thread.
- For stubborn grime, a tiny drop of mild, pH-neutral soap on the cloth is safe. Rinse the cloth and wipe again to remove soap residue.
Never use: ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners, baking soda, vinegar, lemon juice, or commercial jewellery dips — all are too harsh for pearl nacre.
Re-Stringing: When and Why
If you wear your pearl necklace regularly, have it re-strung on silk thread by a professional jeweller every one to two years. The knots between each pearl prevent them from rubbing together and contain the damage if the thread breaks. Discolouration or stretching of the thread are clear signs it is time for re-stringing.
Caring for Pearl Jewellery Set in Silver
Many of our pearl necklaces and earrings are crafted with 925 sterling silver settings. Silver can tarnish over time, but the cleaning method for silver (polishing cloths, silver dips) should never touch the pearls themselves. Use a silver polishing cloth only on the metal parts, keeping it well away from the nacre surface.
Travelling With Pearls
Place each piece in its own soft pouch inside your jewellery roll. Avoid leaving pearl jewellery in a hot car or checked luggage where it may be jostled and exposed to temperature extremes.
Signs Your Pearls Need Professional Attention
- Nacre peeling or flaking
- A chalky, dull surface that does not respond to cleaning
- Loose or missing knots on a strung necklace
- A broken or stiff clasp
In these cases, visit a trusted jeweller for assessment. Minor nacre damage is sometimes irreversible, which is why prevention is always the best strategy.
The Reward of Good Care
A well-maintained pearl becomes more beautiful with age. The natural oils from skin contact, balanced by regular gentle cleaning, can actually enhance the pearl's orient — the deep, inner glow that makes fine pearls so captivating. Treat your pearls as living heirlooms, and they will reward you and the generations after you.
